I fell in love with the world of plants and nature at the age of 18, when I got a job working at a major nursery in Albequerque, New Mexico, where I grew up. From that moment on, gardens fascinated me. Working to enhance nature’s beauty and aliveness, helping it to thrive, has always been one of my greatest joys.
I moved to Los Angeles in 1989 to work as a landscape designer’s assistant at Sassafrass, an influential landscape design company which has since closed. There I learned the importance of the details, and what you don’t always notice about a beautiful garden: the chemistry of the different soils, how to work with variations of light, how to create unusual and harmonious combinations that complement each other aesthetically and work as a proper ecosystem.
Four years later, in 1993, I started my own business designing, installing, managing and maintaining high-end residential gardens. Being proficient in every aspect of a garden, from its conception to its everyday maintenance, is unusual in my field, which tends to be more specialized. But I could never choose between these different facets of the business; I love them all. My versatility is one of my strengths.
